14 Apr 2011

Monaco Telecom has confirmed that it is currently conducting a Long Term Evolution (LTE) pilot project in the principality. The ongoing demonstration has been timed to coincide with the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters tennis tournament, which started on 9 April and continues until 17 April. Trial transmission speeds of up to 100Mbps are currently available at the VIP Village of the Monte Carlo Country Club. Monaco Telecom has selected Ericsson to roll out the LTE network, and the first set of 4G base stations have already been constructed in the Monegasque territory of Monaco.

Franck Bouetardais, CEO of Ericsson France, commented: ‘This is an important agreement for Ericsson. We signed 18 contracts for commercial deployment in the world. Through this partnership with Monaco Telecom, we have the opportunity to demonstrate our technological leadership and our expertise in telecoms services and to accompany and support the successful launch of a 4G LTE network in the principality’. Martin Peronnet, CEO of Monaco Telecom, added: ‘Mobile internet use [quadrupled] in 2010. This trend is accelerating. 70% of phone sales in Monaco are now smartphones’. A full commercial launch has been mooted for 2013.
