Aircel, Etisalat DB and SSTL all receive licence termination notices from DoT

7 Apr 2011

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has reportedly issued notices regarding the termination of mobile network operating licences to three cellcos, according to India’s Economic Times. The regulator specifically revealed that it has issued notices to three operators in question – Aircel, Etisalat and Sistema Shyam TeleServices (SSTL) – for delays in the rollout of commercial services. Both Aircel and SSTL have been issued notices regarding their operations in three circles, while Etisalat DB faces having its concessions in two circles revoked. All three have now been given 60 days to respond as to why they should not have their respective licences cancelled for failing to roll out their networks in accordance with the terms of their concessions; licensees were required to offer services in 90% of their service areas in metros and 10% in district headquarters within twelve months of being awarded their licence.
