Smart Communications, the mobile arm of Filipino giant Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), is increasing its capital expenditure for this year by 18.9% to PHP19.5 billion (USD451.2 million), from PHP16.4 billion in FY2010, to finance a network capacity expansion to meet rising demand for voice call and SMS services. The Manila Times reports a company statement as saying: ‘We expect to make additional investments in our core facilities to maximise existing technologies and increase capacity to accommodate expected continued increases in call and text volumes as a result of unlimited voice and text offerings and other promotions’. Last year the cellco handled 18.32 billion outgoing SMS texts, while data-based services generated 48% of Smart’s cellular revenues, compared with 53% in 2009. Smart’s 2011 infrastructure work is focused on expanding and upgrading its transmission network from the backbone up to last mile facilities to meet increased demand for cellular and broadband services in a highly-competitive playing field.
