6 Apr 2011

Uruguayan state-owned telecoms operator Antel is set to launch a field trial of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in the coming days, BNamericas reports, citing local newspaper Observa. According to Antel’s president, Carolina Cosse, the trials will involve the use of seven antennae, with equipment supplied by French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent. The operator said it aims to begin rolling out the 4G technology on a commercial basis next year. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database states that Antel is Uruguay’s largest wireless operator by subscribers, with an estimated 1.95 million mobile customers at the end of 2010, corresponding to a market share of 43.1%.
