Shaw cutting 500 jobs in restructuring

Canadian cableco Shaw Communications’ president Peter Bissonnette said on Wednesday that the triple-play operator will cut 500 jobs across Western Canada in a restructuring, including around 150 managers and supervisors, as the company consolidates 18 operating regions into seven. The Canadian Press quotes Bissonnette as saying: ‘The overheads associated with those regions have been reduced … the cost effectiveness of our company is really important and we need to start really looking at operating income and the kinds of overhead that we acquired in that growth [referring to the cableco’s quick expansion in recent years in the internet and telephony markets].’ Shaw currently has more than 13,000 employees. Bissonnette added that the job cuts will not affect the company’s recently acquired Global TV assets, as ‘they went through a large restructuring even before we acquired them.’
