Watchdog mediates in Libertis/Airtel interconnection ruckus

Lin Mombo, the president of Gabon’s telecoms regulator ARTEL, is taking steps to help mobile operators Libertis (part of Gabon Telecom) and Airtel Gabon (formerly Zain) resolve a dispute over unpaid network interconnection fees. The two cellcos – controlled by Morocco’s Maroc Telecom and India’s Bharti Airtel, respectively – have not kept scheduled appointments to meet every three months to settle issues of outstanding fees, which have continued to accumulate in the meantime, reports Telecompaper quoting Gabonews. Mombo said that the two firms agreed to recognise the debts and settle the payments, but he warned operators against taking any action in the course of settling their problems which could affect services to end-users.
