The largest mobile operator by subscribers in the Philippines, Smart Communications, plans to launch the country’s cheapest pre-paid handset. The phone’s standard price will be set at PHP650 (USD15), but will be made available initially in selected rural areas as at a subsidised price of PHP499. The company hopes the move will net around 250,000 new subscribers within the first year. The head of Smart’s wireless consumer division, Danilo Mojica, told reporters that ‘the communication needs of as much as 20% of the country’s 94 million people could be addressed by Smart’s latest handset offering’.
