Virgin Media expands enhanced upload speeds to more areas

23 Feb 2011

UK cableco Virgin Media has announced that it has increased upload speeds for its fibre-optic broadband customers in a number of new locations, Cable.co.uk reports. The upgrades, which are being offered to customers at no additional cost, are part of a project that the operator announced back in September 2010 with a view to increasing uplink rates across its network, with Virgin’s lowest level broadband service to offer upload speeds of up to 1Mbps, while its top-end XXL service, which provides download speeds of up to 50Mbps, will have a 5Mbps upload rate. Under the latest round of upgrades Virgin said it has now enabled the higher upload speeds in the following areas: Aldershot, Cambridge, Dalston, Epsom, Lewisham, Linlithgow, Newport East, Oldham and Southampton. Further, it noted that another batch of communities, including Canniesburn, Mapperley and Peterborough, are scheduled to receive the upgrade sometime next month.
