Orascom Telecom has extended its management contract for Lebanese state-owned mobile operator Alfa for a further year, until 1 February 2012. The Egyptian group’s local CEO Marwan Hayek, called the latest agreement with the telecoms ministry ‘an opportunity for us to re-emphasise our commitment towards the Lebanese mobile market … We are looking forward to the future, to accomplish new achievements within Alfa, and to support the Lebanese mobile sector in regaining its pioneering position in the region, in line with the ambitious plan set by the Lebanese Ministry of Telecom for the sector.’ The country’s other cellular network, MTC Touch Lebanon, is managed on behalf of the government by Kuwait’s Zain Group. Privatisations of both cellcos have been scheduled several times in the past, but suspended by political deadlock.
