Final warning to unregistered Zim SIM owners

18 Feb 2011

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has authorised cellular network operators to start implementing restrictions on unregistered mobile lines, effectively as a final warning to unregistered SIM card owners to come forward with their personal details before a deadline of 28 February 2011. POTRAZ director-general Charles Sibanda told state-backed news agency New Ziana that restrictions could include blocking attempts to recharge pre-paid talk credit or assigning the lowest priority to connect a call at times of high network traffic. Sibanda said the regulator was concerned by the failure of subscribers to register despite having extended the deadline, beyond which all anonymously owned accounts face disconnection.
