America Movil’s Ecuadorian unit to adopt Claro brand, test LTE, up CAPEX by 45%

The Ecuadorian mobile unit of Mexican communications giant America Movil, Conecel, which uses the Porta brand name, plans to invest around USD180 million in 2011, up by about 45% on 2010’s figure, the company’s president , Alfredo Escobar, told Dow Jones Newswires. The investment will go towards expanding and improving Porta’s network throughout the country, whilst the company will begin testing 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. Escobar also confirmed that Conecel will drop the Porta name in the second quarter of this year and begin operating under America Movil’s Claro brand. Conecel, which has over ten million subscribers, posted a 10% increase in revenues to USD1.3 billion in full-year 2010.
