MTel to invest up to USD250m in upgrading networks

17 Feb 2011

Hungary’s largest telecoms operator by subscribers and revenues Magyar Telekom (MTel) is looking to invest between HUF10 billion and HUF50 billion (USD50 million and USD250 million) to develop its network infrastructure, its chief technology and IT officer Istvan Maradi told MTI in Barcelona yesterday. MTel, which spent approximately HUF20-HUF30 billion per annum on its mobile networks in the period 2001-2010, has published details of a major network upgrade tender that is currently being pursued by Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks. The winner is expected to be announced at the end of March.

As reported in TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in November 2010 MTel signed a EUR150 million (USD199 million) six-year loan deal with the European Investment Bank, primarily to finance fixed line and mobile broadband investment projects.
