Orange and Vodafone fined for market power abuse

16 Feb 2011

The Romanian subsidiaries of Orange and Vodafone have been fined a total of EUR63 million (USD85 million) for abusing their dominant positions, reports local press. The Romanian Competition Council decided to fine the two companies approximately 3% of their local revenues (USD34.8 million for Orange and EUR28.3 million for Vodafone) after receiving a complaint in 2006 from Netmaster Communications. The company complained that Orange and Vodafone were not allowing it access to their networks. The Romanian regulator also stated that the pair tried to charge Netmaster more than the authorised maximum price for interconnection to their networks.
