Big Ideas: Nextel to use Huawei for Brazil, Mexico W-CDMA networks

16 Feb 2011

US-based Nextel International Holdings (NII Holdings) has picked China’s Huawei to supply it equipment and related services for Nextel’s new W-CDMA networks in Mexico and Brazil. NII Holdings, which has traditionally operated integrated digital enhanced network (iDEN) radio trunking services in Latin America, is now looking to deploy W-CDMA services in both countries on the back of 3G licences it has won there. Under the terms of the contract, the value of which was not disclosed, Huawei will develop and deliver the core network, radio access network (RAN) and backhaul, which will be customised for Nextel’s push-to-talk (PTT) service.
