Softbank Corp’s mobile arm added more new mobile customers than its Japanese rivals in January, the tenth month in a row it has topped the table for net additions. Data published by the Telecommunications Carriers Association (TCA) reveals that Softbank Mobile Corp signed up a net 240,600 new users for a total of 24.64 million, driven by strong sales of Apple’s iPhone 4 smartphone. The country’s largest player by subscribers, NTT DoCoMo, came second with 134,000 net new users for a month-end total of 54.34 million, while eMobile leapfrogged KDDI to take third spot with 81,500, boosting its base to just over three million. The au brand added just 67,000 new users last month for a total of 32.59 million.
