Japanese vendors NEC Corporation and Fujitsu Limited have signed an agreement with four telecoms companies – NTT Communications, Philippines Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), StarHub and Telekom Malaysia – to build the Asia Submarine Express (ASE) cable system. Once up and running, the high-bandwidth fibre-optical system will link Japan to Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Malaysia, delivering a transmission speed of 40Gbps. Under the plan signed today, NEC and Fujitsu will undertake joint overall project management. The manufacture and installation of all submersible plant such as repeaters, OADM branching units and cables, the power feeding equipment and submersible plant monitoring system will be carried out by NEC. Meanwhile Fujitsu will assume responsibility for the manufacture and installation of submarine line terminal equipment and the management controller.
