Japan’s leading mobile operator by subscribers, NTT DoCoMo, is shifting to a flat-rate billing scheme for all data services offered on smartphones and tablets. Further, a similar billing system for data-only devices will be offered from 15 March 2011, Telecompaper claims. It is understood DoCoMo’s new offerings will give users a choice between ‘two-tier’ or ‘full flat-rate’ billing. As such the former will allow customers a PAYG option, up to a set data limit (i.e. suitable for moderate download customers), or pay a flat-rate monthly fee of JPY5,985 if they exceed their limit. Meanwhile the full flat-rate option is priced at JPY5,460 per month with unlimited downloads etc.
