According to a report by Tech Central, South African mobile operator Cell C has been the biggest net beneficiary of mobile number portability (MNP) since the scheme was introduced in November 2010. Citing unofficially published data that was leaked to Tech Central by ‘a source in the telecommunications industry’, the website states that Cell C has won nearly 240,000 subscribers through consumers porting their numbers to its network. 200,000 customers have ported their numbers to Vodacom, with 130,000 users switching to MTN South Africa. Just over 1,000 people have ported their numbers to 8ta, the newest market entrant, which launched in October 2010. Thus far neither telecoms regulator the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) nor Saab Grintek and Telcordia Technologies – the two companies in charge of implementing MNP in South Africa – have commented on source or veracity of the leaked data.
