Tesco celebrates Christmas by reaching 2.5 million customer milestone

24 Jan 2011

UK mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Tesco Mobile, which offers its services over the network of O2 UK, has announced that it reached the 2.5 million subscriber milestone on 25 December 2010, an achievement it claims was the result of its best-ever sales over the Christmas period. The virtual operator said that tens of thousands of handsets were activated on Christmas day, and added that it had witnessed double digit airtime growth in every quarter of 2010 as a result of attracting a range of new customer types via a combination of new service and product offerings. Tesco Mobile pointed to a number of factors as also having contributed to customer growth, most notable of which was the decision to introduce post-paid tariffs during 2010, as well as the rollout of Tesco Phone Shops across the country; at end-December 2010 there were more than 200 retail outlets across the UK. Commenting on the operator’s development, Lance Batchelor, CEO of Tesco Mobile and Tesco Telecoms, said: ‘Tesco Mobile is well on its way to becoming the number one MVNO in the UK. It is continuing to grow its pay as you go and pay monthly base in a declining market space which highlights the network’s appeal to our mobile savvy nation … The rapid expansion of the network of Tesco Phone Shops in 2010 has enabled us to deliver service and value through telecoms retailing to millions of Tesco shoppers and has brought Tesco Mobile as a network to the attention of consumers.’
