Telstra in talks with Ericsson over major mobile network project

21 Jan 2011

Australia’s dominant telco Telstra has confirmed that it is holding talks with Swedish vendor Ericsson regarding a mobile network expansion project, Delimiter reports. The contract for the project in question is expected to be valued at around AUD473 million (USD469 million), and should the deal be completed it is understood that it would represent the largest contract won by Ericsson since it bagged the right to construct Telstra’s 3G infrastructure, which is know by the ‘NextG’ moniker, in 2005. The report goes on to cite industry newsletter Communications Day, which claims that Ericsson has already won the deal, with the vendor set to provide hardware including radio controllers and backhaul equipment for both mobile and backhaul transmission networks; a spokesman for Telstra, however, declined to comment on the matter.
