Here’s looking at Yu: Indian-backed cellco launches data modems

29 Dec 2010

Kenyan mobile service provider Yu has re-launched itself in the internet market by introducing wireless data modems, priced at KES2,599 (USD31.80), bundled with two months’ free unlimited data browsing. The Essar Telecom-backed cellco’s move comes two weeks after rival Airtel unveiled a promotion giving its subscribers a free modem when signing up for a range of packages tailored for various market segments. Yu’s latest move could intensify competition at a time when mobile service providers are battling to generate new revenue streams after voice tariffs halved in August.
