MNP arrives with a whimper, not a bang in Bangkok

8 Dec 2010

Mobile number portability (MNP) has been launched successfully in a pilot stage in the Thai capital Bangkok, and is reportedly popular with consumers based on demand in the first three days. However, portings are initially limited to just 500 numbers per day at 25 designated service locations in the city. Each of five operators – AIS, DTAC, True Move, TOT and CAT – are limiting MNP to 100 customers per day. Premon Pinskul, chairman of the cellcos’ joint venture Clearing House for Number Portability Co, said the company found no initial technical problems on the launch day (5 December) and had processed 1,500 MNP requests since Sunday.
