AFP is reporting the head of Swiss telco Sunrise as saying that he would not rule out fresh merger talks with France Telecom’s local arm Orange Switzerland. Earlier this year plans to merge the two companies were abandoned following a veto by the Swiss Competition Commission. ‘I think we could not rule out new talks on a merger between Orange and Sunrise,’ Sunrise chairman Dominik Koechlin told the business weekly Handelszeitung.
After the merger was nixed in June, TDC agreed to sell Sunrise to private equity firm CVC Capital Partners for USD3.3 billion. The deal was completed in October. It is possible, however, that the firm could be sold on to the French telecoms group if the Swiss competition authority could be persuaded to soften its position. The anti-trust body had objected to a tie up on the grounds that a merged company would have taken a dominant position in the mobile telephone market alongside top Swisscom, leaving the country with just two wireless networks.
