US cellcos AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless have reportedly agreed a joint venture (JV) which will see them collaborate on the construction of a mobile commerce network, branded ‘Isis’. The initiative, which will utilise near-field communication (NFC) technology, will initially work towards building a mobile payment network that enables users to make point-of-sale purchases, before expanding the service’s scope. Isis is working in collaboration with Discover Financial Services’ payment network – which is currently accepted at more than seven million merchant locations across the US – to develop an extensive mobile payment infrastructure for the JV. It is anticipated that Barclaycard US will be the first issuer on the network, offering multiple mobile payment products. Isis said that it expects to introduce its service to key geographic markets over the next 18 months.
