End to roaming fees in border zones in sight?

16 Nov 2010

According to TelecomPaper, Chile’s telecoms ministry has proposed eliminating roaming fees in border areas with Argentina and Peru in 2012, and extending the measure to other areas of the countries at a later date. Citing a report by La Tercera, the telecoms regulators in Chile, Argentina and Peru are said to be working together on the process. ‘We want to start with border zones and then reach a more complete agreement,’ said Jorge Atton, Chile’s undersecretary for telecommunications. He added that the national regulators were identifying areas of high call traffic and personal movement to define the zones to be considered ‘borderlands’.
