China to trial MNP in Tianjin and Hainan

8 Nov 2010

China Securities Journal is reporting that China will launch a commercial trial of mobile number portability (MNP) in Tianjin Municipality and Hainan Province on 22 November. In a document released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) to the country’s big three operators – China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom – the regulator said the trial would allow users to switch network providers while retaining their numbers. Analysts believe implementation will encourage 3G users to switch to China Unicom’s W-CDMA network from China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA platform, as the former’s 3G technology is more mature and offers a wider array of handset options.
