BSNL to expand 3G coverage; targets 2.5 million new subs by March 2011

State-owned Indian operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is planning to extend the reach of its third-generation network to a further 120 cities across the country by the end of the year, India’s Economic Times is reporting. The forthcoming expansion was announced by Minister of State for Communications Sachin Pilot, who also confirmed that at present BSNL was offering 3G services in a total of 640 cities. Further, Gopal Das, BSNL’s chairman and managing director also revealed that the telco is aiming to increase the number of 3G subscribers it has signed up by more than 2.5 million before March 2011; at end-October 2010 the operator had 1.8 million 3G subscribers, the executive noted.
