AIS posts 17% rise in net profit

4 Nov 2010

Thailand’s largest cellco by subscribers Advanced Info Service (AIS) achieved a better-than-expected 17% rise in quarterly net income in July-September2010, boosted by growth in data and non-voice services, Reuters reports. AIS, 21.4%-controlled by Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), posted a 3Q10 net profit of THB4.9 billion (USD165 million), up from THB4.2 billion a year earlier. AIS’s total mobile subscribers increased to 30.5 million by the end of September 2010, from 30 million in 2Q10. Pre-paid net additions in the three-month period reached 467,000, higher than the 296,000 added in the third quarter of 2009, attributed to Thailand’s economic recovery and growth of pre-paid ‘Internet SIM’ data packages, although the growth figure was slightly down from 478,000 net pre-paid additions in April-June 2010. Post-paid net additions reached 27,000 in 3Q10, up from 20,000 the previous quarter but down from 84,000 in the corresponding three months of 2009.
