Mobile phone users in Bahrain will be able to switch wireless network providers without having to change their phone number within the next six months, it has been announced by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). The regulator also announced that all fixed line subscribers, including those using WiMAX networks, will be allowed to do the same within eight months, from 1 July 2011. TRA chairman Dr Mohammed Al Amer said number portability was another milestone in the liberalisation of the telecommunications sector. ‘It will empower consumers to select the licensed operator which best suits their needs,’ he added.

The TRA also announced that it will soon issue a request for tender for the implementation of the central system for porting numbers.
