NTT DoCoMo's profit rises 22%; expects to beat smartphone sales target by 30%

Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo has reported that its consolidated net profit for the three months to the end of September 2010 rose by 22.0% year-on-year to JPY167.6 billion (USD2.1 billion), driven by cost cuts and growth in smartphone sales, and despite revenues that fell by 1.1% to JPY1.05 trillion in the company’s fiscal second quarter compared to the same period a year ago. Quarterly operating profit climbed 24.7% y-o-y to JPY291.0 billion, and the cellco kept to its full fiscal year forecast of JPY840 billion operating profit and JPY497 billion net profit. DoCoMo added that it expects to beat its full-year sales target of one million smartphones by as much as 30%.
