TalkTalk and Alcatel-Lucent develop on-demand TV system for YouView

21 Oct 2010

Alcatel-Lucent has announced that it has signed a three-year agreement with UK-based broadband operator TalkTalk to build a Content Delivery Network (CDN) running over TalkTalk’s existing high speed IP network. The CDN will use Alca-Lu’s Velocix range of solutions to deliver on-demand TV content directly over IP networks to subscribers’ set top boxes and PCs. Content may be downloaded directly into the Velocix infrastructure and then dynamically distributed across the TalkTalk network to end users. According to the release, the CDN announcement comes as the first related to YouView (formally known as the Canvas Project), which is an open, internet-connected television platform built on common standards, by the UK’s terrestrial broadcasters BBC, Channel 4, ITV and communications companies Arqiva, BT and TalkTalk. TalkTalk is using the Velocix solution to deliver YouView traffic, namely UK television content. YouView is expected to launch to UK homes in mid 2011.
