Verizon Wireless, the US’ leading mobile operator by subscribers, has denied speculation that it is involved in the sale of surplus spectrum being held by WiMAX operator Clearwire. In a terse statement, Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Nancy Stark commented: ‘We’re not participating in the Clearwire auction’. Other potential participants in the tender of frequencies were rumoured to include AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Time Warner Cable and Clearwire’s parent company Sprint Nextel.
As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Clearwire hopes to raise between USD2.5 billion and USD5 billion via the spectrum auction with a view to securing additional funds to fuel its expansion. Clearwire, which currently operates under its own brand and through wholesale partners in 55 different markets, is rumoured to be selling up to 40MHz of spectrum per market.
