Pay-TV provider is CNT’s Media darling and triple-play-mate

Ecuadorian state-run full-service telco Corporacion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) has chosen Peru-based Media Networks, part of the Telefonica Group, as its partner to provide direct-to-home (DTH) satellite-based pay-TV services in Ecuador as part of triple-play broadband, telephony and TV packages, according to the El Comercio newspaper. From 2011, CNT plans to resell Media Network’s pay-TV channel line-up, following pilot test broadcasts scheduled for December this year, with a USD5 million initial investment earmarked for the project. Alfredo Arosemena, Media Networks’ regional manager, said that a relatively low pay-TV penetration in Ecuador – approximately 12% of the population – despite the presence of 272 licensed pay-TV providers, was a factor encouraging the triple-play launch of CNT.
