Claro invests USD24.5m in network expansion

Uruguayan mobile operator Claro Uruguay, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mexican-owned group America Movil, has invested USD24.5 million in the expansion of its wireless network this year, local news source El Pais reports. The cellco has ploughed the funds into the deployment of 74 2G base transceiver stations (BTSs) and 103 3G cell sites, as well as the introduction of Apple’s iPhone 4G. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database says that Claro is Uruguay’s third largest mobile operator by subscribers with an estimated 860,000 customers at 30 June 2010. Meanwhile, market leader Ancel had an estimated 1.89 million mobile users at the same date and second-placed Movistar Uruguay reported around 1.66 million.
