MegaFon, Russia’s second largest cellco by subscribers has announced that it has launched commercial 3G services in the cities of Voronezh and Tambov. MegaFon reports that 100 3G base stations are now fully operational in Voronezh, with a further 30 situated in Tambov. The operator estimates that its network covers approximately 80% of each city. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, MegaFon won one of three 3G licences auctioned by the government in April 2007. At the end of 2009 its 3G network covered 63 municipalities nationwide. MegaFon has confirmed plans to launch 3G networks in Lipetsk and Belgorod in the near future.
