Televisa/Nextel joint venture finally awarded wireless licence

4 Oct 2010

Mexican media giant Televisa and its partner in a joint wireless venture, Nextel Mexico, a unit of NII Holdings, have finally received their much-contested concessions, less than a week after NII vice president Gustavo Cantu said that the two companies would see off any disputes related to the matter. According to Bloomberg, the handover, which had been delayed by a number of legal challenges, including one by Grupo Iusacell which sought to block the sale on the grounds that the JV was paying too little for the frequencies, has now taken place. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Televisa and Nextel won the government’s August 2010 spectrum auction, having offered the minimum bid of MXN180.3 million (USD14.1 million) for a 30MHz block in the 17010MHz to 2170MHz band in all nine of the country’s mobile operating regions.
