On? Off? On! Cabinet approves Ukrtelecom privatisation, but no schedule yet

29 Sep 2010

The Ukrainian government has approved the privatisation of the state’s 92.8% stake in national PTO Ukrtelecom via an auction, after the Cabinet of Ministers passed an edict to this effect on 27 September, writes locally-based Millennium Capital. However, the official decision backing the stake sale did not include a schedule for the launch of the auction, although the report surmised that it will take place by the first quarter of 2011. Having been scheduled for this month by the State Privatisation Fund, the long-delayed sale of the fixed, broadband and 3G mobile operator looked to have been derailed yet again by the failure of the government to implement a universal service fund for subsidising rural and unprofitable telecoms access services, currently operated at a loss by Ukrtelecom.
