Televisa facing delay for spectrum allocation

27 Sep 2010

Just over a month after it was announced that the joint venture between Mexican media giant Grupo Televisa and Nextel Mexico, a unit of NII Holdings, had won the government’s auction of a nationwide concession for spectrum in the 1700MHz band, the JV looks set to face a setback in bringing services to market. According to Reuters, a court ruling is now preventing the Secretario de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) from allocating the new licensee the wireless spectrum it had been awarded. No further details were immediately available regarding what had prompted the legal decision.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, the joint bid by Televisa and Nextel was the only one received for a 30MHz block in the 17010MHz to 2170MHz band in each of the country’s nine mobile operating regions; it offered the minimum bid of MXN180.3 million (USD14.1 million) for the concession.
