Telecom Italia has announced that it made total investments of EUR121 million in Sicily in 2009, of which approximately EUR47 million was spent on the development of its fixed broadband and mobile networks. Telecom Italia president Gabriele Galateri estimates that the telco will spend an additional EUR113 million in the region during 2010, of which EUR50 million has been earmarked for further improvement of its broadband and mobile services. Broadband coverage in Sicily has reportedly reached 98.7%. Galateri added that Telecom Italia hopes that 50% of the country’s population will be passed by a 100Mbps broadband connection by 2018.
