German cable network operator Unitymedia has announced it has begun offering broadband internet at download speeds of up to 128Mbps in the federal states of Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. In Hesse, Unitymedia has expanded the offering to Gelnhausen and the surrounding region, while in North Rhine-Westphalia the 128Mbps service, dubbed ‘Fiber Power’, has been made available in Dusseldorf, Dortmund, Recklinghausen, Essen, Neuss and Kurten. In total, around one million households will be able to benefit from the upgrade, which is based on EuroDOCSIS 3.0 technology. Unitymedia is a subsidiary of US-based cable company Liberty Global Inc, which completed the acquisition of the German firm in January 2010. Unitymedia passes 8.8 million households in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse.
