Mobistar launches Mobile HD Voice on its 3G network

Belgian cellco Mobistar has claimed it is the first mobile operator in the country to launch Mobile HD Voice technology over its third-generation network, offering customers the ability to make calls in high definition if they have a compatible handset at no additional charge. Mobistar said that the technology was using the AMR-WB (Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband) speech codec, providing enhanced audio quality as a result of using a wider speech bandwidth of 50Hz–7000Hz compared to the current narrowband speech codec which uses 300Hz–3400Hz. The operator said that, whilst it already offers a limited range of Mobile HD-capable handsets, in light of launching the technology across its network it expects the range of handsets with the feature to be ‘steadily expanded’.
