Catel increases CDMA network footprint

Azerbaijani CDMA operator Catel, which provides services under the Fonex brand, has expanded coverage of its cellular CDMA2000 1x network to Shamakhi in the west of the country. At the same time, the operator’s wireless services were made available in a number of surrounding settlements, including Sabir and Melhem. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan Business Center reports that Catel intends to focus its expansion efforts in the north of the country, with plans to install a number of base stations in up to four regions in the area by the end of the year. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Catel is Azerbaijan’s smallest mobile operator by subscribers, with around 53,000 customers at 30 June 2010, representing a market share of 0.7%. At present, Catel’s CDMA network is available in the capital Baku, Absheron, Sumgait, Kurdamir, Udzhare, Shirvan, Geychay, Mingachevir, Ganja, Shamkir, Agstafa, Balakan, Sheki, Shabrane, Nabran, Guba, Lankaran, Astara, Masalli, Jalilabad and Tovuz.
