PTA orders WiLL operators to register customer data

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has revealed that operators providing wireless in the local loop (WiLL) services will be required to implement the same subscriber data verification process as is required of mobile network operators, the Daily Times reports. It is understood that the regulator had actually advised two of the country’s six active WiLL providers – Wateen Telecom and Worldcall – of the requirements some six months ago, and by end-August 2010 the pair had recorded information on 100% and 60% of the customer bases respectively. Moving forward, all WiLL operators will need to provide customer data to the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA), following which the PTA has said that any ‘fake’ subscribers must have services disconnected.

According to official figures, at the end of March 2010 there were 2.64 million WiLL subscribers in Pakistan, with fixed line incumbent accounting for the bulk of those, around 1.21 million, or 45.8%, at that date. TeleCard and Worldcall meanwhile had 668,911 and 577,480 WiLL subscribes at end-March 2010 respectively.
