Alca-Lu wins deal with Telkom to upgrade backbone network

6 Sep 2010

French/US equipment vendor Alcatel-Lucent (Alca-Lu) has been selected by Indonesia’s dominant telecoms operator PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom), to undertake what is being called a ‘major transformation’ of the telco’s backbone network. By converging Telkom’s IP and optical networks, Alca-Lu hopes to enable the operator to cope with the increasing data traffic, simplify its network, and reduce costs while providing high efficiency and robustness. Under the contract Telkom will be better placed to manage operational and power consumption challenges resulting from traffic growth, by leveraging Alcatel-Lucent’s Converged Backbone Transformation offering, it said. Alca-Lu is supplying its 1830 Photonic Service Switch combined with its service router IP/MPLS platform with integrated tuneable dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) interfaces for Telkom, and will also provide it with technical supervision and training across the offering.
