UQ inks deal with GCT for WiMAX solution for train users

Japanese WiMAX operator UQ Communications has signed a contract with GCT Semiconductor, a leading supplier of mobile WiMAX solutions, for the supply of its GDM7701 integrated baseband system-on-chip (SoC), which is designed for Femto applications, and which powers the WiMAX low-power train repeaters installed by UQ as part of its continued expansion of WiMAX services in Japan. In a press release GCT said the train repeaters consist of Kyocera’s WiMAX low-power repeater and WiMAX/Wi-Fi gateway, to provide improved indoor WiMAX and Wi-Fi connectivity to train passengers. GDM7701 includes a mobile WiMAX MAC and PHY baseband, high-performance triple-processors, an array of peripherals for connectivity, and supports up to 2×2 multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology. The train repeaters also include GCT’s GRF7204, a 2.5GHz WiMAX RF application which provides the mating RF functionality for a complete WiMAX Femto AP solution, it said.
