Friendly O2 launches LTE love-in

9 Aug 2010

Telefonica O2 Germany and Huawei Technologies announced yesterday that they have launched trials of Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks with several hundred friendly users in Munich and Ebersberg. The network in rural Ebersberg is operating in the 800MHz band, while the Munich network utilises the 2.6GHz band.

TeleGeography’s 4G Research Service reports that at the end of July O2 announced plans to build two trial LTE networks in Munich and Halle in the 2.6GHz band, and two test networks in the 800MHz band in Ebersberg east of Munich and Teutschenthal west of Halle. Huawei is the equipment supplier for Munich and Ebersberg and Nokia Siemens Networks will partner with O2 in Halle and Teutschenthal. Last month O2 revealed it would offer free LTE, to selected participants in the four areas, for six months to test out the networks before they go live.
