2 Aug 2010

Russian telco Vimpelcom, has acquired Russian fixed line provider Foratek for RUB1.4 billion (USD46.43 million), including debt. Foratek Communication, which is one of the leading players in the Urals Federal District, owns more than 1,200 kilometres of fibre-optic networks. Vimpelcom Vice President Andrey Patoka commented: ‘This deal will allow us to increase the length and capacity of Vimpelcom’s own trunk line and enable it to meet growing demand in data transfer segment and reduce leasing costs’. Since 2009 Vimpelcom has been actively expanding in the fast-growing broadband sector, helping to offset mobile market saturation and comparatively low fixed line usage.
