Russia’s telecoms regulator Roskomnadzor and the country’s armed forces have agreed to release wireless frequencies in the 1900MHz and 2100MHz bands for allocation to mobile operator SkyLink and its subsidiaries, according to Telecompaper quoting Russian newspaper Vedomosti. Under the plan the 3G frequencies will be awarded to SkyLink and its regional units SSSS, MSS and Delta Telecom, operating under the SkyLink brand. The cellco, currently operating 3G services based on the CDMA2000 1xEV-DO standard in the 450MHz band, is reportedly looking to gain 2100MHz spectrum to launch UMTS-based 3G services in direct competition with larger players MTS, Vimpelcom and MegaFon, although the proposals rest on final approval from the Ministry of Communications.
