Argentine telecoms cooperative association Fecosur plans to commercially launch mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) services on 29 July, TeleSemana reports. The service, offered under the ‘Nuestro’ banner, will operate over the infrastructure of Telecom Personal, the wireless arm of incumbent telco Telecom Argentina. According to the president of Fecosur, Enrique Alonso, services will initially be available in the town of Villa Gesell in Buenos Aires province, but will be expanded to other parts of the country in the future. He added that Fecosur aims to sign up 100,000 subscribers to the MVNO offering within the first two years of operation and reach two million users within four years.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Fecosur signed an agreement with Telecom Personal in May 2009 to launch services over the cellco’s infrastructure. Pilot tests with were launched the following September in several municipalities, including Colonia Caroya, Rio Tercero, Villa Gesell, San Bernardo, Mar del Plata, Pergmanino, San Bernardo, Balcarce and Dolores. At the same time, Argentina’s other telecoms cooperatives federation, Fecotel, was said to be in negotiations with Personal to offer mobile telephony through an MVNO scheme. Together, Fecosur and Fecotel represent around 300 telecoms cooperatives across the country.
