Ncell blocks UTL numbers amid argument over illegal VoIP calls

26 Jul 2010

Nepalese mobile operator Spice Nepal Private Ltd (Ncell) has barred calls from around 15,000 United Telecom Ltd (UTL) numbers after it started receiving voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) calls from some of them, local daily Nagarik reports. IP telephony is banned in the country with the regulator, the Nepal Telecom Authority (NTA), keen to clamp down on any calls which may adversely affect the revenue of a licensed telecoms service provider. Ncell apparently blocked the numbers on charges of diverting the calls through a different network, Sanju Koirala, Corporate Manager of Ncell, is quoted as saying. UTL has reacted angrily saying that whilst it agrees to the block on numbers found to be making illegal VoIP calls, it is unfair of Ncell to indiscriminately block calls from all numbers starting from 972158.
